Where to Stay in Detroit: A Neighborhood Guide

  • Posted on

Detroit is not one city — it's five or six cities stacked on top of each other, each with its own vibe, walkability, and reasons to love it. If you're trying to figure out where to stay in Detroit, the neighborhood you pick will shape your entire trip. A place in Midtown feels different from a place in Corktown, even if the two are only three miles apart.

Great Stays has 36 properties spread across five Detroit neighborhoods: Midtown, West Village, Brush Park, Corktown, and The Villages. Here's an honest local's breakdown of each one so you can choose where you'll actually enjoy being.

Midtown Detroit

What It Is

Midtown is Detroit's cultural heartbeat. It sits just north of downtown and packs more museums, restaurants, and institutions per square mile than any other neighborhood in the city. If this is your first time in Detroit and you want to walk to a lot of stuff, Midtown is the right call.

What's Walkable

The Detroit Institute of Arts is world-class — genuinely one of the best art museums in the country, and free for Wayne County residents. The Motown Museum (Hitsville U.S.A.) is a five-minute walk from most Midtown blocks. Wayne State University anchors the academic crowd. Traffic on Woodward Avenue keeps things lively day and night.

Best For

First-time visitors, art and culture lovers, couples, solo travelers, anyone who wants to walk to dinner.

Eat & Drink

  • Batch Brewing — neighborhood brewery with solid food
  • Antietam — upscale but approachable, great for date night
  • Mad Nice — the best pizza in Detroit, no debate

Brush Park

What It Is

Brush Park is Detroit's comeback story made physical. For decades, this neighborhood's Victorian-era mansions sat empty. Today it's a mix of restored historic homes and new construction, sitting directly between Midtown and Little Caesars Arena. The location is almost unreasonably good for sports and concert fans.

What's Walkable

Little Caesars Arena (home to the Red Wings and Pistons) is a 10-minute walk. Ford Field is 12 minutes on foot. Comerica Park, home of the Tigers, is right there too. You can leave for a game and not worry about parking — which, in downtown Detroit, saves you $30-50 per night.

Best For

Sports fans, concert-goers, groups, anyone who wants to be inside the action without paying downtown hotel rates.

Eat & Drink

  • Bar Pigalle — playfully modern French fare and cocktails, ground floor of the Carlton Building in Brush Park
  • Lena — excellent local spot
  • Gray Ghost — outstanding cocktails and food
  • Second Best — great neighborhood bar and restaurant
  • Bodega — perfect for drinks

Great Stays Properties Here

Our crown jewel in Brush Park is The Lucien — a stunning condo inside the historic Lucien S. Moore Mansion, rated 4.96 stars with 160+ reviews. It's one of the highest-rated short-term rentals in Detroit. The City Modern condos brought new life to the neighborhood. Parking is residential permit only in much of the area, but the location is unbeatable: you can walk to all the stadiums and arenas. Book early — they move fast.

West Village & The Villages

What It Is

West Village is where Detroiters actually live — and it's part of the broader group of neighborhoods known as The Villages (East Village, Indian Village, and adjacent areas on Detroit's east side). This is a residential stretch with small businesses, indie coffee shops, and a farmers market that runs year-round inside the old Detroit Savings Bank building. It's quieter than Midtown and less flashy than Corktown, but people who stay here tend to come back.

What's Walkable

East Warren Avenue is the main commercial strip — you'll find good coffee, great food, a record store, and excellent restaurants within walking distance. Belle Isle, Detroit's island park in the Detroit River, is a short bike ride or drive away.

Best For

Return visitors, remote workers, families, anyone who wants a residential feel without being far from downtown.

Eat & Drink

  • Red Hook — coffee shop
  • Marrow — excellent restaurant
  • La Fonda — great burritos
  • Two Birds — drinks
  • Velvet Tower — vintage store worth checking out
  • Norm's Diner — good local diner
  • Collect — on Mack Avenue
  • Father Forgive Me — connected to The Shepherd, a community art space

Corktown

What It Is

Corktown is Detroit's oldest neighborhood and its trendiest. Ford Motor Company's Model e campus is here, tech workers have moved in, and the restaurant and bar scene is as good as anywhere in the Midwest.

What's Walkable

Michigan Avenue is the main drag — it runs from downtown straight through Corktown. The old Tigers Stadium site (now Goose Island Detroit) is a neighborhood landmark. Slows Bar BQ has a line most nights.

Best For

Foodies, groups, weekend trips, business travelers who want something with character.

Eat & Drink

  • Takoi — the #1 restaurant in the area (and the city)
  • Alpino — Alpine/Swiss-inspired, fantastic
  • Ottava Via — great Italian
  • Slo's Bar BQ — a Detroit classic
  • Grandma Bob's — really good pizza
  • Ladder Four — a converted fire station, James Beard nominated
